On December 2, 2015, fifteen ASDA service committee members volunteered at A Safe Haven which is a homeless shelter for mothers and their children. The students provided proper oral health instructions to over 50 children around the ages 3-12 and distributed goodie bag donations consisting of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. Overall it was a very humbling and enriching experience for the student volunteers and the committee plans to continue collaborating with the organization for future service events!
By John Tran, DMD c/o 2018, UIC ASDA Pre-dental Chair 2015-2016
Our annual pre-dental open house was a huge success! This year, we had over 100 pre-dental students from surrounding institutions, including UIC, Loyola University, Benedictine University, Depaul University, and many others.
UIC ASDA was involved in hosting the tour and activity sessions as well as the ever-popular Q&A panel with current dental students. For the activity, we utilized our modern pre-doctoral clinic where our attendees were guided to perform Class I cavity preparations on #3 and #14 with pencil and mirror on the dental chair. UIC ASDA volunteers also showed the students the Universal Numbering System and proper operator positioning.
We look forward to hosting you guys again in the upcoming semester. Stay tuned!
by Katrina Lo (Advanced Standing Program, Class of 2016) Social Media Chair UIC ASDA 2015-2016
Hi! My name is Katrina and I'm currently the chairperson of social media for our ASDA school chapter. I have joined the ASDA executive board over a year ago and it has been one of the most rewarding student experiences so far. Last weekend I have the privilege of attending the ASDA National Leadership Conference with two other fellow executive officers here in Chicago! Honestly I have only the vaguest ideas and expectations about the conference - you know, like the usual networking, advocacy and rubbing elbows with other ASDA chapters. So when I sat down on many of their general and breakout sessions, I am staggered by the numerous invaluable insights I have gained about leadership, which I would not have gotten elsewhere.
I believe Dentistry calls us to be leaders and ASDA's mission is to empower the dental students to be leaders. I will be graduating in May 2016 and the things that I have learned from the conference have given me a boost of self-confidence. I think no dental students graduate knowing how to run a business or taking charge of employees or leading a team. Practice Management is an overlooked subject in dental school. From the honest and varied experiences and testimonies of the speakers, I have secured a wealth of information and advice to at least know where to start. I have learned that there's a huge difference between being a boss and being a leader. My goal is the latter - a leader who will inspire others to reach their potential and possibly become leaders too.
Being surrounded by other ASDA student leaders in the conference makes me realize that no goal is insurmountable. I discover that after listening to the other student chapters, we have many things or issues in common. Everyone is supportive and helpful in discussing and working out solutions to improve each student chapter. I personally have taken down a lot of notes to bring back to UIC. The great thing about being part of ASDA is everyone wants everyone to succeed.
NLC weekend has been very productive and this is just one of the benefits of being an ASDA member. As someone has said, leadership is learnable. If you want to develop your skills as a leader, ASDA is a great place to start and I encourage each dental student to actively get involved in ASDA.
by Daniel Pagel, President Elect UIC ASDA 2015-2016, Pre-dental Chair District 7
This was my first time attending the National Leadership Conference and it was just as inspiring and fulfilling as I come to expect from ASDA. It was really great having the opportunity to meet dental student leaders from all across the country and see what perspective they have on everything. I was able to attend educational seminars on topics that included: post-graduate programs, developing your personal brand, student debt management, and making effective videos for your chapter. ASDA brought in exceptional speakers to talk about leadership and what it takes to become a better leader to those around you. I learned so much about what true leadership is and how I can improve our chapter here at UIC. It felt good to be a part of such a great organization and an inspiring group of leaders!

While a lot of people were focused on the Bank of America marathon last weekend, UIC ASDA hosted its own sporting event, the annual ASDA Prophy Cup. Held at the Klein Creek Golf club, students, alumni, and faculty played a round of golf in a beautiful warm weather day. Thank you for the UIC ASDA fundraising team for organizing this event.
Pre-dental students visited UIC College of Dentistry on October 1 and learned more about the profession through dental student volunteers who shared dentistry school life to these future dental students. The event was a collaborated effort between UIC Predental Committee and UIC ASDA and enjoyed a successful turn-out of pre-dental students. In addition to answering questions about admissions and school life, the dental student panel showed a powerpoint presentation highlighting their pre-clinical activities and endeavors.
5 UIC dental student represented UIC ASDA student chapter in the District 6 and 7 meeting held at the Ohio State University on Sept 18-20, 2015. The students who participated were President Yale Cho, President-elect Dan Pagel, Secretary Nasim Lasemi, Service Chair Vivian Castellanos, and Membership chair Shawn Jung. UIC ASDA was part of the District 7 whose board members included secretary, Yale Cho and Pre-dental chair, Dan Pagel. The District Leadership meeting was very inspiring for these students, who wanted to make a difference in the Dentistry world through ASDA.
Midwest Dental hosted a networking event for UIC ASDA dental students at the West End Bar on September 24, 2015. Amidst the good food and drinks, students were introduced to career opportunities at Midwest Dental from its recruitment consultant, Mr. Derek Lindholm. The company boasted of dental practices at 15 states around the Midwest and East coast regions. To learn more about this company, visit their website at midwest-dental.com.
We hosted a Lunch and Learn on GPR and AEGD programs! Dr. James Benz, director of the GPR program, and the current residents from the Advocate Illinois Masonic Dental Center gave an informative presentation on the differences between the two programs, the application process (PASS & Match), and how to be a competitive applicant. Thank you for the insights!
